Sub Meter

The 5-hour and weekly subscription windows as a bar in the footer. Zero tokens.

Generic Claude Mods cover for Sub Meter, which has no screenshot yet: a placeholder terminal

Sub Meter puts your Claude subscription usage in the Claude Code footer, at the bottom right, on the line that shows the permission mode. A ten-cell bar shows how much of the 5-hour window you have used, then the weekly one, switching every 8 seconds, followed by the time until that window resets. It asks the model nothing, so it costs no tokens.

The README draws it like this:

⏵⏵ auto mode on 5h ━━━━━━──── 58% · 2h 10m

What it does

  • The bar turns yellow at 75% and red at 90%. The time left reads in minutes, hours and minutes, or days and hours.
  • Once a window’s reset time has passed, the bar shows 0% until the next reading.
  • It drops the (shift+tab to cycle) hint after the permission mode to make room. Whatever Claude Code or another mod draws in that spot stays, before the meter.
  • There is no monthly window, because Claude Code reports only the 5-hour and weekly ones.

Install

Needs Claude Code 2.1.287 or later and a Claude subscription. With API key billing there are no windows to show, and the footer stays as it is.

claude plugin marketplace add midudev/better-claude
claude plugin install sub-meter@better-claude

There is nothing to run: the meter shows from the start of the session. /config sets the seconds per window (rotateSeconds) and whether the cycle hint goes (hideCycleHint). It is part of midudev’s better-claude marketplace, which also ships the prompt queue After.

How it works

The numbers come from Claude Code itself. $.session.usage() gives a first reading at session start, and session.measure brings new numbers after each response. The last reading is saved in the plugin store, so a new session shows it before its first response. A ui.render hook on the footer’s SessionMode component adds the meter after the mode labels, and one on PromptHint rewrites the hint line. It makes no network calls.

Limitations

  • The percentage moves only when a response ends, since that is when Claude Code reports the windows.
  • The author documents it in the terminal only.
